Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speech writer. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency the website which hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for more than a decade. Feminist Frequency, a website to educate about women's roles in the world of pop culture, is operated by Sarkeesian. Aiming to break down the stereotypes that are associated with females in popular culture, she is also working to highlight issues related to harassment targeted at women as well as other classes of people in the online world. Sarkeesian, who holds a Master's in Social and Political thought from York University, is also a highly sought after public speaker. She has presented speeches at TEDxWomen's XOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. Since her early years, Sarkeesian was fascinated by questions of gender identity as well as feminist thought. As a student, in 2009, she founded her Feminist Frequency Website. She was launching a series of online videos that examined the female representation in video games after she was the subject of online harassment. The harassment, however, did not deter her. It only strengthened her as a feminist journalist. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards due to her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the author of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit which studies the portrayals of women in popular culture storylines.
